Why your Transit radio asks for a code
Ford fits an anti-theft lock to the factory radios in the Transit, Transit Connect and Tourneo. When the van loses power – a flat or replaced battery, a jump start, or work on the electrics – the radio locks itself and shows CODE or KEYCODE until the original 4-digit code is entered.
Vans often change hands several times, so the radio code card that came with the vehicle is frequently missing. The code is tied to the radio's own serial number, not to the VIN, so you can recover it from the serial alone.
Which radio is in your Transit?
| Van | Common factory radios | Serial starts with | How to see the serial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transit Mk6 (2000–2006) | 4500 RDS EON (cassette), 6000 CD | M + 6 digits | Hold 2 + 6 (4500) or 1 + 6 (6000 CD); otherwise on the label |
| Transit Mk7 (2006–2014) | 6000 CD, Sony CD | V + 6 digits | Hold 1 + 6 with the radio on |
| Transit Connect (2002–2013) | 4500 RDS EON, 6000 CD, Sony CD | M or V + 6 digits | Button method first, label if nothing shows |
Fitments vary by market, trim and year. The serial on your unit is what matters: if it starts with M or V followed by 6 digits, it is supported.
How to unlock your Transit radio
- Show the serial. Switch the ignition and radio on. Hold buttons 1 and 6 together (or 2 and 6 on the 4500 RDS cassette unit) for about 3 seconds. Several codes scroll past; the serial is the one starting with M or V.
- No serial on screen? Older 4500 RDS and early 6000 CD units often don't display it. Remove the radio with a set of four Ford radio release keys and read the serial from the barcode label on the case.
- Get the code. Type the serial into the box at the top of this page and press the button. The price for your country is shown before you pay; the code appears immediately after payment.
- Enter the code. Press button 1 as many times as the first digit, button 2 for the second, 3 for the third and 4 for the fourth. Then press and hold 5 until the radio confirms.
Before you start
- Count your attempts. After a few wrong codes the radio adds a waiting time; after 10 it shows LOCKED. Leave the radio switched on with the ignition on until the timer clears.
- A radio swapped from another van has its own code. Always use the serial from the unit in your dashboard, not the one on an old code card.
- Transits from 2014 onward with the SYNC system normally do not use a radio code.

I tried this site and it worked 100% correctly on my radio! Ford dealer told me he also can provide for free visiting them, but having the option to receive the code via Internet, with a fast response time is ideal. Thank you so much for such a great service!
